“I’m more afraid riding in the car!” claims aerobatic pilot and wingwalker, Teresa Stokes of Houston, who, for 20 years, has been performing aerodynamic feats with her partner and pilot, Gene Soucy. This, coming from a woman who, at times, is being held in place by nothing more than centrifical force! “I’m not going anywhere,” she says calmly.
In a sport so rare that she has had to train herself, Stokes walks from the bottom wing of the plane to the top; climbs in and out of the cockpit; and often ends performances swinging from her knee or standing on her head. “It’s still as exciting as if it were the first day!” she exclaims.
Stokes finds it equally invigorating inside or outside the plane.
“As a pilot, it’s the biggest thrill in the world; it tickles your stomach. When you’re on the outside, [you have] a beautiful view; it’s like the world is tumbling around you. I’m laughing and screaming.”
On the rare occasions her feet are on terra firma, Stokes finds aviation painting “peaceful.” Stokes, who lived on a houseboat for 18 years, also relaxes by taking her powerboat out on the water. Her “big hobby” is riding steam trains and collecting train memorabilia.
“I guess I like the boy’s toys better than the girl’s,” this daredevil says, laughing.
