Whether you've got a pack of your own or are expecting pint-sized visitors for the holidays, keeping kids busy is a great way to keep them out of trouble--and away from your china cabinet. Plus, you needn't spend a bundle to get them started with simple projects like these.
Find the Clues: Whether they're fans of the popular Blue's Clues show or not, most kids will enjoy finding blue-hued paw prints scattered around the house and garden. Simply cut little paw pads from ordinary painter's tape and place them where you see fit. Older children may wish to help make the clues, too. If you're feeling especially ambitious, you can create a game out of looking for them and offer simple prizes.
Decorate the Den (or the Bedroom): Gather simple objects like inexpensive photos or have the kids create drawings (preferably with washable crayons or markers!), grab the painter's tape again, and let the kids put the images up on a blank wall and move them around as they see fit. You can also use this technique to create a family tree on the wall.
DIY Playdough: I flipped for some sweet-scented dough last summer. With a bit of research, I found that Jell-O was the source of the smell. This recipe works great for kids of all ages. Not only are the ingredients likely sitting in your larder, it's super easy to make. Again, older children may want to help with the preparation--but do provide close supervision to avoid accidents.
